Mai, our Digital Tutor, is now multi-lingual, making it more helpful than ever!
Primarily focused on supporting students with English as an Additional Language (EAL), it is now possible to assign Mai to assist students in a language other than English.
We know it can be a huge challenge for schools to comprehensively support EAL students; we believe this will be an incredibly useful tool for doing so.
How it Works
Here’s a video to help you get started:
When supporting a student in a language other than English, Mai will provide a translation for the question and answers in the student’s preferred language. This will help the student understand the question's content while accelerating their English language acquisition.
Additionally, hints and explanations are also delivered in the preferred language. That way, these students are put in the best position to embed the concepts and knowledge they need.

What is Mai?
Mai is our Digital Tutor, supporting students with two powerful features:
‘Mai Helps’: Accessible when answering questions, this feature provides hints that educate and build background knowledge. Students can explore topics further through continued conversation.
‘Mai Explains’: Triggered after an incorrect answer, this provides a breakdown of each answer, helping students grasp subject areas where their understanding is weaker.

Multi-Lingual Mai doesn’t exist in isolation. It forms a core part of our broader Equity and Inclusion offering, which is a set of tools designed to help schools close any disadvantage gaps without adding further to teacher workload.
Too often in education, digital tools promise equity but inadvertently widen gaps. Unlimited ‘in-app’ support from Mai, Tassomai’s AI-powered tutor (which can now work in any language to support EAL students)
Built-In Audio: Text-to-Speech can be enabled to read out every question, hint, and answer. Great for neurodivergent pupils or anyone who struggles with big blocks of text on screen.

Unfortunately Tassomai cannot afford to provide these products free of charge to all schools since they cost money to run on a per-user basis; however, for schools with multi-cohort and/or multi-subject implementation, we do tend to offer these products for free and absorb the cost ourselves.

In our study conducted with randomised samples of some 20,000 students, Pupil Premium students with the Boost package achieved an average of around 35% greater course progress per homework than the control group. Our benchmark testing showed that these students averaged around 25% less homework per week, and 7% less progress per homework, so we were pleased to see that the intervention more than mitigated for the lower engagement and attainment. The SEND and EAL boost products are new for 2027, so we will wait to see results, but we expect them to have a similar impact.

We expect so: we expect that for the more commonly spoken/written global languages, our EAL translation modules will perform extremely well; when a language is particularly rare, it may be the case that the fidelity of the translations suffer somewhat; we are keen to work with schools who have this situation so that we can learn and test more.
